Allahabad Fort
A large riverside fort built in the Mughal period, standing at the meeting point of the two rivers.
History
The fort was built by the Mughal emperor Akbar in the sixteenth century on the bank at the confluence. It later passed through Maratha and British hands and remains in use by the Indian Army today.
Religious & cultural significance
The fort complex contains the Patalpuri Temple and the revered Akshayavat, along with an Ashokan pillar, making it both a military and a religious landmark.
How to reach
Auto-rickshaw or taxi to Sangam Road; the fort gate is close to the Sangam approach.
